chris's journal entry #57; "Science Club Camping Trip [Updated]" on 2005-07-25:
Previous Next
Sorry for this appearing rather late, but I enjoyed my first Science Club camping trip as an alumni member. The weather was, for once, pretty good. No hurricane-strength winds, no rain averaging 5'/hour, no freezing temperatures, and no 5*(surface temperature of the sun) degree heat either. We all enjoyed hiking and wandering aimlessly around High-Cliff park. We did eventually find the trail that I kept promising was there, but that we never found for quite a while. We also enjoyed the view from the tower, and also a nice boat ride on Lake Winnebago.

Camp-O-Lympics ©®™!
Overall, my team won (which was a first for me, I think.) Oh, wait, spoiler alert!!! please read the following paragraph before you read the first sentence. Anyways, our first task was to use our compass-reading skills to find hidden baby food jars with paper inside. We were doing fine until we were off on our last jar, which was like only 5 feet from where we were looking the first time, but since we had to walk about 100 feet, being off by a few degrees did us in. Next, we had to start fire, within 30 minutes, using lint, a 2" magnifying glass, petroleum jelly (vaseline), black paper, an egg carton, a small candle, some rope, and some other fire-starting-type stuff. Our team got it, finally, right before time was called. The team who did this before us had no success, and the third team got theirs in like 8 minutes. It only took about 2 minutes for ours to light, but everything we tried in the first 28 minutes didn't work well enough to start and maintain a fire. Then we prepared our solar cooker using plastic wrap, a limited amount of aluminum foil, duct tape, scotch tape, black paper, and a medium-ish box. The objective was to get the best-cooked refrigerated biscuit the fastest. Our cooker ended up winning this part of the Camp-O-Lympics ©®™, (all thanks to my excellent solar cooker design ;).) And finally, to win the Camp-O-Lympics ©®™ overall, the last event/competition was Star-Wars ©®™ Trivial Persuit ©®™. Thanks to Moose being on my team, we were able to actually get some answers answered correctly, and we won late into the night (around 10:00?) As prizes for winning this year's Camp-O-Lympics ©®™, we received a 5-function whistle, that also has a tiny magnifying glass, a compass, a keychain, and a thermo-meter, as well as 4 AA batteries. That is all for now, I don't think I really forgot too much in here anywhere.
