Well, the $2/month VPS seems to be working sufficiently.

Made some tweaks to the CAPTCHA, hopefully that effectively stops the spam again. [edit - apparently not :( [edit the second - made more changes, seems to be working well so far]]

Neal G said:
Good call on the http limit. I also use that on my website. Chris you should write a blog on scoring the new job at LC. maybe you could post some picture of your cube/office once you get it. PS I like the numbers only captcha. I hate those darn uppercase-lowercase ones. There too hard to read/use.

Chris Retlich said:
Okay, so I've been getting a lot of spam on here, and had to both implement a CAPTCHA (which was broken, or being manually entered by spammers?) as well as a filter to limit the occurrence of "http://" to a maximum of two times per post. These two actions seem to have stopped the spam for ~24 hours, so it seems like it's working. As a side note, the text of your post is filtered so that links appear as plain text, so I'm not sure what benefit the spammers thought they were getting anyways, since AFAIK, Google only looks at actual hyperlinks and not text URLs. AAAAAAA!!!

I've quickly (as much dial-up allows me) put up some randomly selected good pictures from my brother's wedding. You can see them at this URL: http://chrisretlich.com/pictures/?folder=Wedding

Neal Grosskopf said:
Yay, the dev site with a functional menu too! Chris you should post some images from your brothers wedding on here. We're all dying to see you in a tux, without a simpsons shirt on :)

Chris Retlich said:
I have finally gotten around to working on my dev site a bit... You can see it at http://dev.chrisretlich.com/

The world's worst URL: http://www.royalmint.com/RoyalMint/web/site/Corporate/Home/Corp_faq.asp

Chris Retlich said:
Were you trying to type this: ‽ - hmmm... perhaps I should rewrite the message filter to allow that through.

Neal Grosskopf said:
‽ ‽ ‽ ‽ ‽ ‽

Chris Retlich said:
Um... try http://wiki.chrisretlich.com/ ... shhh, don't tell anybody ;)

Chris Retlich said:
All of Wikipedia? I have considered doing it before, since I have set up a wiki on my older computer - had to install Apache, PHP, and MySQL to be able to use it, and it was slow as heck (but then again, so is that computer... now that it has more ram, maybe it'd run a lot better?) Anyways, PageBuildr has a wiki on it too; http://pagebuildr.com/wiki/

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris you should put wikipedia on your site. I would on mine but I don't have php obviously. It would be neat to mess around with. http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=657808

Neal Grosskopf said:
Is that "think marketing" quote a lakeland rip off? Sounds like our think lakeland one.

Chris Retlich said:
this page says it all...
Favorite Quote: "Think marketing" - that's definitely him!

Chris Retlich said:
Joe Pomrening? That may be him. He recently (about three years ago) got usurped by the malevolent Commander Taco and I'm not sure where he went or what happened to him since. Also, the theme has been changed.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris I think being that it is the first day of spring you should change your site's theme. Also did your old principal (pomering or something like that) recently leave? Our principal in new london has a name like yours and recently came here.

Chris Retlich said:
I heard this morning that Blackboard was down (again) or having some kind of stupidity problem on their end that caused no courses to show up when you logged in.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Yeah... I logged in today and it worked again. Lol I even called the 24/7 helped desk for lakeland but they never answered.

Chris Retlich said:
Are you using grosskopf#### (last name+SSN), or ##### (student ID number)? You should be using your student ID number. Works okay for me.

Neal Grosskopf said:
When you log in to blackboard does it have you not signed up for any courses? It tells me I'm not. Ahhh!

Chris Retlich said:
I suppose that would make sense... They _are_ kind of just floating off in space there.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris you should have some kind of border around the boxes on the homepage to distinguish one from another. It seems sort of like phantom scroll bars.

Chris Retlich said:
Okay, so now I've put the slightly newer/modified homepage up on my site. If you have any issues with it, please send it through my contact form: http://chrisretlich.com/contact/

Chris Retlich said:
New site design coming? I have a new site design that worked on a bit (not the dev.chrisretlich.com one) and I may eventually post a link to it, or just outright replace the current homepage with it.

Chris Retlich said:
Here you go, Nic: http://forums.lc-capslock.org/

nic said:
hey wheres the link to the CPS stuff.

Chris Retlich said:
Try this in CSS: font-variant: small-caps; also, p:first-line, or p:first-letter (or any type of block-level element other than "p" would work too)

Chris Retlich said:
Oh, thanks. No problem. I knew there were uppercase and lowercase things, and I did a little searching to see if there was a "camel case" CSS property too. I think there is also something along the lines of "smallcaps" where you get capital letters, but they are shorter.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Hey chris thanks for the "text-transform:capitalize;" code. I wasn't aware of that (i found it on your dev site. That will be showing up on my site now!

Chris Retlich said:
Well, it's a shorter URL, and, um, I just like it that way. Also, I don't want google/etc. getting two copies of my site in their databases.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris whats with the redirect on your site from www.chrisretlich.com to just chrisretlich.com ?

Chris Retlich said:
Well, it appears that 1&1 has extended their discount for an unannounced amount of time. Also, I've spent a while converting links all over my site to point to relative URLs (e.g. /politics/ instead of http://s90602692.onlinehome.us/politics/) so that they point to the new site instead of the old one (which redirects you back to the new site anyways, but, it's faster/better to not redirect people too much ;) . So, I'll be busy whenever I have free time to update links and references to "S90602692". See you around.

Chris Retlich said:
Well, it appears that I have 2.33 days left until the 25% off discount on web hosting expires - so I'll be purchasing some kind of hosting package by then. Expect to see an official post about it sometime soon. I'll also have a domain name (or two) registered as well!

Chris Retlich said:
Yet another change... now this should allow you to post HTML in your message, and if you do, you'll see the HTML as HTML, instead of being rendered. this would be a link but it's not!

Chris Retlich said:
Well, now this has a two-step message submission process. This should both help stop spamming, and should help people avoid spelling mistakes.

Chris Retlich said:
Bye bye, comment spam! Ugh, well, now to implement an anti-spamming filter or something.

Chris Retlich said:
You mean this one? The point is that you see the story from three perspectives, and also you learn more about how and why different events happened as you go along.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris have you seen the simpsons episode where the entire episode repeats itself half way through? What was the deal with that? I didn't get it.

Chris Retlich said:
Just made a new page using a program I threw together. Try and copy-paste the text, also look at the source code. By the way, only try selecting text in FF as IE freezes. Here it is!

Neal Grosskopf said:
Here's the RF Laboratories website. It's not really that great for what the guy makes his company out to be. Maybe he outa hire you and me? http://www.rflab.com/index.htm

Chris Retlich said:
Yeah, right after I completely redesign the rest of my website, do projects, presentations, and finals, finish my networking project, finish and upload a few programs, and do everything else! Or perhaps during/after May term when I will (hopefully) have some free time.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris you should spend a good 10 hours redesigning this message board. You are totally capable of a sweet one!

Chris Retlich said:
Hey, thanks. I know that I found a method that uses some borked Javascript code to accomplish that (I used it on the photogallery pages e.g. this one so that wide pictures scale to fit within our template). This looks a bit better.

Here's some more Firefox extensions, including a few neat ones I haven't seen before.

Neal Grosskopf said:
lol your parents are math nerds like you chris

Chris Retlich said:
Yeah, I got home (after reading the link at school) and my parents go and ask me about what's so special tonight/tomorrow morning, so I just casually say um... 1...2...3...4...5...6? Well, just caught it in a nick of time too, went to add the FF extension page to my site, then boom! glanced at the message board and thought, "shoot! that's going to be any minute now!", well turns out to be like half a minute away, and then I went to time.gov and got a screen grab of the exciting action.

Neal Grosskopf said:
Chris when I read this I knew it would be an article that you would like check it out here

Chris Retlich said:
that's not a bad idea... I'll get on it

neal grosskopf said:
Chris you should have put a link to a contact me form on your error page and see home many people would contact you.
