Review of movie Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on 4/30/05 by chris:

This movie, if you haven't already read the books, starts with the most ordinary man on Earth; Arthur Dent. He then finds that his best friend is actually from a different planet, and that the Earth is about to be destroyed. They narrowly escape the Earth's destruction, and then have all kinds of adventures in space. Much hilarity ensues, and we all find that the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42.

This movie was very funny, and remained fairly true to the book, but there were a number of little things that weren't explained, or weren't explained as well as in the book. Other smaller details were altered significantly as well, but overall it was an accurate representation of the book, considering how inaccurate some other book-to-movie movies of the past are.

Other things weren't quite as I imagined when reading the book; Zaphod's two heads were represented as one head, which occasionally flips back to reveal the hidden head. Also, Marvin's planet sized brain is about the size of a Volkswagen's interior.

I really liked the book, the many levels, and examples of humor, satire, irony, etc., and this movie was more-or-less on par with the book, in my opinion.

In closing, the movie, although not exactally perfect, was worth seeing, and probably worth buying/renting when the time comes. (4.7/5 stars, or whatever.)
