chris's journal entry #107; "Trick XOR Treat" on 2007-11-01:
Previous Next
So I came up with this ponderance today: shouldn't people be saying "trick XOR treat" (read: "trick exclusive or treat") on Halloween, after all, aren't you really stating that either you will receive a treat, or trick the person but not both? The current and incorrect way of saying "trick or treat" means that the person will give you a treat, be tricked, or both, but you really don't mean to state that both will occur, do you? Another more precise alternative is to say "you shall be tricked if you do not treat me".
